Kuang Laowu: Wildness and Silence

Written on the occasion of the winners of the United Nations 2024 International Competition for Minority Artists

Although I have written a lot of texts, I gradually understand that it is almost impossible to accurately describe some things through words. The efforts to obtain a more reliable expression have caused me pain and despair... But the impulse to express is unstoppable for individuals. In order to let others and the world see the cultural and artistic creation of a minority group (Tibetans), for many years, as if some mysterious mission called, I have tried to convey a little weak voice to society and the world through performance art, easel painting, and writing articles. To the world, it may be insignificant, but for me, the confirmation that the bird has flown and the traces have been left is my inner motivation. Although I have experienced extraordinary struggles on this artistic path, I have staggered all the way, and accidentally walked into the United Nations and was recognized. I feel surprised and lucky.

When I wrote this, a picture of Manjusri Bodhisattva incarnating as the mighty form of Vajrabhairava suddenly flashed in my mind. It was one of my paintings on an easel. When the wild and quiet heart merged with it, could compassion and wisdom arise?

If life is viewed as a parabola, where is the starting point of my art? I think it was during my primary school years. On my way home from school, I saw a Tibetan folk clay sculptor carving a statue of King Gesar in a temple under a huge rock. The image of Gesar riding a warhorse and fighting bravely with his head held high has been indelible in my mind ever since. I begged my mother to take me to visit this folk artist named Yu (Tibetan, changed his name to a Chinese surname). It was also the first time I saw many sketches and portraits, including portraits of gods, ghosts and people. Something magical happened. At that moment, it was as if I was suddenly enlightened, and I thought to myself, I want to become such a person. Later, my elder brother, who was studying in the county town, brought back sketch pencils and watercolors during the summer vacation. Seeing him painting seriously aroused my curiosity and yearning. Later, when I was in the fifth and sixth grade of elementary school at the foot of the mountain, I carried a bottle of honey and went to meet a folk artist because he painted a large painting of local scenery on the container of the supply and marketing cooperative. Unexpectedly, he gave me a few magazines of "World Art". I saw Paul Klee's paintings for the first time, which were full of childishness and engraved in my mind, arousing my wild imagination in my childhood. Yes, he is a Swiss artist (I only knew that he was Swiss when I wrote this article). It's amazing to think about it. Today, I came to his hometown to participate in the 2024 International Competition for Minority Artists jointly held by the United Nations Human Rights Office and the non-governmental organization International Minority and Freemuse. I was lucky to win two professional awards, the Performance Art and Painting Awards. Sometimes, you have to sigh that there is a deeper connection in the dark.

When I had forgotten about it, I suddenly received an email saying that I was selected. I jumped up with excitement and almost caught a cloud floating over Dali.

(Laura CahierUnited Nations Human Rights Adviser

In this way, I communicated with Ms. Laura, the human rights adviser of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in the Internet. She faced the harsh reality of my poor English and only knowing three sentences with kindness, patience, and rigorous and meticulous work attitude. With the help of Google Translate, I was able to have basic communication with her. Dear Ms. Laura, thank you for your deep understanding and care for me and my community. Without your help, I would not be here.

This can be regarded as a fantasy journey in my old age. Over the past few decades, I have been passionate about artistic creation, maintaining silence in the studio, and rushing around in the field of performance art. My body and mind have performed wildness and silence in turn. In Geneva, the god of fate has favored me. This wonderful grace should be rare in a lifetime.

I walked up to the podium, happy to enjoy this moment of vanity. In the award ceremony hall, I looked at the rows of guests attending the ceremony, my voice trembling slightly, but I tried to calm myself. After I finished my short speech, the applause was thunderous. I felt like I was rising to the clouds. Let me stay there for a while, and then return to the world.

When I received the award certificate from Mostafa Betaree, I read our mission from his eyes. He is a Palestinian exile. The cruel war destroyed his homeland and took away one of his loved ones. I saw the sadness and determination in his eyes. We rebuilt the Palestinian national homeland on the ruins of the war and soothed the psychological trauma caused by the war. When I presented the hada to him, we hugged each other tightly. I saluted this cultural warrior and felt the common resonance. He quickly gave me a bracelet he cherished from his bag. He looked at me, and I...

My Award Certificate

When Yvonne Apiyo Brandle-Amolo handed over the award trophy, I also accepted a heavy responsibility, which made me ask why it is the responsibility of intellectuals today? As a social activist, she has been fighting against racism through her own actions, speaking out in society and online, causing people to reflect and say no to racism.

Kuang Laowu is a Chinese Tibetan visual artist and independent critic, born in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. His works explore themes of memory and commemoration in contemporary China through the vivid interaction of colors and textures on large canvases, with Tibetan traditional symbols and patterns. Since 2000, after various stylistic experiments, Kuang has clarified his personal painting language, adopting "Abstract Expressionism", a style that seeks conflict, restraint and balance between colors and images on canvas, and tends to pursue a pure metaphysical pursuit of mystery and eternity. As a manifestation of the Tibetan artist's identity, the mantra "Six-Character Mantra" ("Om Mani Padme Hum"); which Tibetans chant repeatedly in their lives, appears in most of his paintings. Kuang Laowu incorporates this mantra into pure painting practice and spiritual imagery by repeatedly writing it on the canvas, and this process is accompanied by historical emotions and intimate experiences. "Different from the color gradation of Western painting and the elegant and quiet color concept of Han painting, Tibetan painting art has strong and rich color contrast. The stone carvings and cave art of Tibetan folk art perfectly combine religion and nature, and are a dialogue between man and God between heaven and earth. During my college years, I traveled alone to Dunhuang, and was shocked by the thousands of years of murals in the Dunhuang caves. I was thinking about how these art craftsmen thousands of years ago painted in loneliness day after day with what kind of piety. Can their life forms and meanings of existence be determined and distinguished? "He recalled. "In the modern experience of Tibetan artists, the disappearance of personal sense of history and fragmented existence always form a contradiction and symbiosis with the cultural identity and primitive nostalgia of Tibetans. This fragmented metaphor is the secret clue to the world of my works," Kuang explained. Over the past three decades, award-winning artist Kuang Laowu has participated in a large number of art exhibitions in China, such as the 798 Biennale and the "Art in Action" exhibition held by the European Union Embassy in Beijing.

The jury was moved by Kuang Laowu’s ability to interpret the complexity of Tibetan customs, beliefs and memories through visually engaging paintings. His work was considered a haunting reflection on how collective understandings of cultural heritage and identity can be expressed through art, using memory as a lens to explore the broader social and historical narratives of ethnic minority communities. In addition to the use of color, texture, composition and contrast in his work, the jury noted that his paintings offer a unique perspective on the relevance of preserving ethnic minority memory from the perspective of the Tibetan community in a thought-provoking way. The dynamic composition and emotional depth of Kuang’s paintings are a poignant reminder of the power of memory in restoring collective identity and celebrating the enduring nature of communities determined to preserve their unique heritage. “Kuang Laowu uses color in a way that can be felt when language is transformed into images, just like the six-syllable mantra that is constantly repeated in the lives of Tibetans,” said Zahra Hassan Marwan, a judge for the competition.

(Andrew Wong)
“Kuang Laowu’s work delves into the intersection of personal and cultural history, modernity and traditional Tibetan identity. He uses mixed media to give these themes a rich and layered expression, creating visually and emotionally compelling works that provoke profound reflection.”

I was pleased by the accurate interpretation of my work by the two judges. To be honest, I have been engaged in contemporary art for 30 years, and no Chinese art critic has ever commented on my work. This may be related to my disdain for Chinese art critics. The perspectives of these two critics gave me the opportunity to think about my work differently, and how to fit my deep understanding of the real situation of my ethnic group under globalism and cultural hegemony in the current fragmented era, and to make my own voice through various artistic expressions to express the situation and cultural dignity of Tibetans.

The eight artists who came to Geneva to attend the award ceremony stood out from many competitors. They are all experts in their respective professional fields. For example, Bianca Broxton from the United States uses sculpture and collage to depict minority groups and make their voices heard. Her sculpture installation works give people a creepy and horrifying feeling. Following the twisted roots, one seems to feel the sadness under the smoothness.

I was conquered by the music of Maganda Shakul from Uganda. His installation works use cheap plastic bottles to cut and create innovative expressions of the deterioration of the local ecological environment. The use of these waste products gives individuals unlimited expansion of creativity. If humans are used to the visual pollution of those exquisite and magnificent fake artworks in art galleries, and then look at Maganda Shakul's simple and down-to-earth works, I believe you will have the answer. Well, I will play Maganda Shakul's live music at the award ceremony. When he put on the shell mask and the music sounded, did you feel like you were in another time and space?

Maganda Shakul and I

Maganda Shakul, when you return to Uganda, when you are scissors flying and creating new works, don't forget that we exchanged a cigarette on the lawn chair in front of the Palais des Nations, and then talked for a long time with gestures. I have to be honest, I didn't understand what we were talking about? But the work of art is the medium that connects you and me. Words are superfluous. We understand the purity of art.

Jayatu Chakma from Bangladesh, you won the Young Artist Award this time. Although you are young, you seem to be worried. Bangladesh is in a troubled time. Your works have a touch of sadness from the perspective of an intellectual. I thought I understood your works because of the faint but implicit cruel message.

There is also Chuu Wai, a girl from Burma who lives in exile in France. You have a pair of eyes that speak and are full of wisdom. You had to live in exile in France because of your struggle for the rights of Burmese women. Your experience reflects the price of resisting power. I am impressed by your feminist works. There is also Joel Perez Hernandez from Mexico. Your crisp and hearty laughter is very contagious. Thinking of you, my heart is full of smiles.

There are also two fellow artists, Francis Estrada (Filipino-American) and Andre Fernandes (Brazil). It is the magical power of art that brings us together in Geneva. It is the far-sighted attention paid to minorities by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights that provides us with a platform for communication. My long shadow is left on the streets of Geneva

This time, I had the honor to listen to the brief reports from representatives of various minority groups of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This is the only platform for the rights of human minority groups. I seem to see the compassion of mankind in the space here, and also the ocean where the sorrows of minority groups gather. Just like the colorful and diverse ecological landscape of the Mediterranean seabed decorated on the dome, it undoubtedly represents the beautiful vision of mankind's desire to respect each other and share diverse values. I wish mankind a heart full of compassion and kindness, and I wish myself a perfect journey of awakening and practice. Tashi Delek!
